Watercolor attributed to François Roux depicting “the mixed-propulsion steamship Styx, assigned to service in Algeria, departing from Toulon in rough seas.”

The scene takes place in the Mediterranean, and the ship is viewed from a three-quarter forward angle on the port side, sailing broad reach on the starboard tack.

Around it, a schooner is visible on the left and a three-masted ship on the right.

On the back of the paper, visible through a small window, is a drawing of a brig on starboard tack.

Executed with great finesse.

Dimensions: 74.3 cm x 89.3 cm (frame) – 50 cm x 66 cm (watercolor).

Made circa 1850–1860.
